Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Post-Masters Clinical Fellowship program at the University of Missouri Counseling Center (MUCC)!  We are excited to accept applications for the Summer 2024-25 positions from individuals who will be seeking licensure in professional counseling (LPC) and have/will obtain a Masters degree from a mental health counseling program (e.g., Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counselor Education, Community Counseling, etc.) or counseling psychology program by August 5, 2024.

Priority consideration will be given to applications received by April 1, 2024. The Fellowship start date will be August 5, 2024. The fellowship will be for a 12-month period with potential for renewal for a second year.

At MUCC, we are passionate about training, and it is a core piece of our work. We value our trainees and aim to provide a supportive environment in which clinical fellows can apply established knowledge and skills to practice as a generalist clinician while receiving supervision, consultation, and didactic experiences that promote professional growth.

Job Description

The Post-Masters Clinical Fellowship is designed to prepare individuals intending to obtain licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for independent practice by providing experiences that promote clinical and professional development. In addition to their status as employees at the MUCC, Fellows are also trainees. Therefore, ideal candidates for this position are motivated to learn and hone their clinical skills through in-depth supervision, training seminars, and independent professional development time.

The fellowship is a full-time, salaried (with full university employee benefits), 1-year (12 months) position from August 5, 2024 through August 1, 2025. There will be the potential to renew for a second year, provided interest from both the Fellow and MUCC.

Clinical duties will be supervised by licensed staff (Licensed Psychologists or Licensed Professional Counselors) at MUCC, who are approved by the State of Missouri for supervision of LPC hours.

The Post-Master’s Clinical Fellowship operates within MUCC’s “learning by doing” philosophy of training, which is centered upon development through application of established knowledge and clinical skills and promotes self-reflection, feedback, and consultation. This approach differs from the highly structured, didactic approach that individuals received in graduate school. Fellows will have opportunities for supervision and consultation from licensed clinical professionals with a range of areas of expertise and operating from various theoretical orientations.

Description of Job Duties

  • The primary role of this position is to provide direct clinical services to university students. Clinical activities will be predominately comprised of individual therapy (including intake evaluations). Opportunities for sub-specialization with certain populations or presenting concerns may be available.
  • Additionally, the Fellow will be tasked with leading or co-leading one of MUCC’s many group therapy offerings each semester, with the Fellow’s group preference being considered along with center needs.
  • Fellows will also receive training and experience in the development and provision of outreach services to the university community.
  • Formal training opportunities include at least two (2) hours of individual supervision per week, supervision of group therapy, and a weekly group case conference.
  • Other activities include staff meetings (monthly), didactic training seminars (monthly), professional development time, preparation and records, and a clinical/administrative project that incorporates the Fellow’s training interests and the needs of the center.
  • Work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, with occasional after-hours due to programming or clinical needs.

Setting

  • The University of Missouri Counseling Center (MUCC) is located on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri and is a part of the Department of Student Health and Well-Being within the larger Division of Student Affairs. We are located on the newly renovated 4th floor of Strickland Hall.
  • The MUCC provides clinical services—including brief individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and referral services—and serves the larger campus through outreach, consultation, and responding to campus needs during challenging times.

Requirements

  • The position requires completion of a Masters degree from a mental health counseling program (e.g., Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counselor Education, Community Counseling, etc.) or counseling psychology program by the start date.
  • Applicants accepted for the position must be able to pass a background check which will be conducted prior to their start date in accordance with University of Missouri HR-504. This background check may include, but not be limited to, criminal history, verifications of employment and education, and driving records. Each background check is considered individually, and consideration will be given to the relationship between the information obtained in the background check, the responsibilities of the position, and the recency and severity of the offense. A relevant job-related conviction or guilty plea is grounds for termination. The University does not employ any individual required to be registered under sections 589.400 to 589.425, RSMo (Missouri Sex Offender Registry) in a position as a “professor or instructor,” which includes post-Masters fellows. Applicants who are offered the position of Post-Masters Fellow but do not successfully pass this background check will be dismissed from the fellowship.

Salary and Benefits

Overview of Activities

Please Note: Specific hours are tentative and subject to change.

Direct Contact Hours

  • 18 individual therapy hours/week: This is the maximum number during peak times. This includes individual evaluation appointments (similar to intake appointments), which are conducted with new clients.
  • 2 group therapy hours/week:  You may view our current group offerings at this link: https://wellbeing.missouri.edu/mental-health-services/group-counseling/. Note that group offerings vary by semester. Groups selected for fellows to lead will be based on a balance of their interests and clinical needs)

Supervision

  • 2 hours/week primary supervision: Supervision for most individual clients
  • 1 hour/week of secondary supervision/case supervision: Additional supervision (with a supervisor different from primary) that is focused on 2 cases
  • 0.5 hour/week of group therapy supervision
  • 1 hour/monthly meeting with coordinator: Meeting with fellowship cohort and coordinator to check-in and provide information/support on general issues.
  • 2 hours/week preparation for supervision

Additional Activities

  • 1-2 hours/monthly for training seminars: Presentations by staff on a specific clinical topic.
  • 1 hour/week peer support  
  • 1 hour/monthly for staff meeting
  • 1 hour/week for professional reading/development time
  • 6 hours/week designated paperwork and preparation time
  • 1 hour outreach/semester: Option for additional experience may be available based on interest and center needs
